COLOMBO (News 1st); Wildlife Officers from Mahiyanganaya were deployed to carry out a special operation to drive away a herd of wild elephants who were seen roaming on the banks of the Mahaweli River in Welithuduwala, Mahiyanganaya.
Locals claim that this particular herd causes serious damage to their property and cultivations.
They say that these wild elephants wander into the villages and night in search of food, and leave a trail of destruction during their exit from the villages.
Wildlife Officers from Mapakadawewa, Hasalaka, and Girandurukotte took part in this operation.
