Country going bankrupt by next month: Patali

COLOMBO (News 1st); Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka says that the country will be bankrupt by next month if the Government does not take decisive action to come out of this financial crisis the country is in.

Participating in an attorney's conference of the 43rd brigade, Ranwaka stated that the country has arrived at a historical moment of bankruptcy since the independence of 1948.

The MP, speaking further, stated that by next month, Sri Lanka will have to pay sovereign bonds worth 500 million US dollars and the country will also have to pay 242 Million USD in development bonds.

Moreover, debt of more than 200 Million USD should be paid to World Bank, Asian Development bank and JICA, and the country has to pay off a total of 900 million US dollars within the first month of next year, the MP pointed out.

MP Champika also stated the country has only 1.15 billion dollars in foreign reserves that can be spent, and emphasized that the country will be bankrupt unless a proper course of action is taken.

"This crisis was solely created by Rajapaksa's, May it be the COVID-19 crisis, Gas explosion or urea, there is no gentlemanly tradition where you take responsibility and then leave the position," he said.

The MP also stated that after being elected as the President, there is no tradition where the President takes whom he wants into the Parliament, and removes people as he wishes, until now.
