Foreign vessel intercepted with 250kg heroin, brought to Colombo Harbour

COLOMBO (News 1st); The foreign fishing vessel which was intercepted by Sri Lanka Navy in international waters, with 250 kg of heroin on 11th of December was brought to the Colombo Harbour on Wednesday (15).

Previously, a special operation mounted by the Navy in international waters led to intercept a foreign fishing vessel carrying a large consignment of narcotics, with 06 suspects aboard.

After several days of continuous surveillance in the international waters about 900 nautical miles (about 1665km) south of Sri Lanka, this operation was carried out by the Sri Lanka Navy with the assistance of the Police Narcotic Bureau, based on information received.

It is believed that the 225 packets of narcotics, contained in 09 sacks, weighed over 250kg.

The suspects have been identified as Pakistan and Iran Nationals, said Naval authorities.

The seized narcotics were displayed to the media for the first time on Wednesday (15), where Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne was also present at the occasion.
