COLOMBO (News 1st): The term of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Electoral Reforms has been extended to the 31s of March 2022. Accordingly, the approval has been granted to extend the term of the Parliament Select Committee to Identify Appropriate Reforms of the Election Laws and the Electoral System and to Recommend Necessary Amendments, based on a proposal submitted by the Committee Chairman, Leader of the House Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, in Parliament on Friday (Dec. 10). The Parliament Select Committee to Identify Appropriate Reforms of the Election Laws and the Electoral System and to Recommend Necessary Amendments was established following the resolution passed by Parliament on the 5th of April 2021. The Committee held its first meeting on the 17th of May 2021. Representatives of Political Parties, the National Election Commission, the Delimitation Commission, the Attorney General's Department, Election Monitoring Organizations, other relevant institutions, and organizations, as well as relevant stakeholders, were summoned before this Select Committee recently, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee said. The report of the Select Committee is being prepared, he noted. The term of this Committee was scheduled to end on the 16th of January 2022.
