Only genomic sequencing can detect Omicron, Important to take measures to prevent entry

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Deputy Director-General of Public Health Services said the Omicron COVID-19 variant that is spreading across the world can only be detected by genomic sequencing.

He warned that the variant could spread in Sri Lanka, while the genomic sequencing process is taking place.

"It is not possible for us to determine if travelers are entering the country with this particular variant. Therefore, we need to carry out a genomic sequencing process from a sample obtained from within the country," he told reporters.

He said what is paramount is to ensure measures are taken to prevent this variant from entering the country.
