COLOMBO (News 1st); Another six year old girl, injured following the Kinniya Ferry Disaster earlier this week, passed away on Sunday (28) morning.

Accordingly, the death toll from the ferry disaster increased to seven.

On the 23rd of November 2021, a ferry transporting approximately 20 people including 20 children capsized in the Kinniya lagoon.

Six people drowned and 12 others were hospitalized, and one of them succumbed on Sunday (28) morning.

The Mayor of Kinniya, the Owner of the Ferry and two ferry operators were arrested and remanded over the incident.

The bridge that was constructed over the lagoon back in 1977 was destroyed by bad weather six years ago.

Following the ferry disaster ugly scenes were witnessed in the area as enraged locals blamed the authorities for failing to construct a bridge and introduce a safe mode of transport.

The residence of a Member of Parliament representing Kinniya was also vandalized.
