COLOMBO (News 1st); Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today (27) called for the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate reports on gas cylinder explosions.

Speaking at the Parliament, the Opposition Leader also called for the standards set down by the Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI) with regard to gas cylinders to be updated and to notify the Consumer Affairs Authority afterwards.

Citing three reports which were compiled with regard to the gas composition in 12.5kg and 18kg gas cylinders, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that the reports mention that the propane: butane ratio, which was supposed to be set at 70:30, has been brought down to 50:50.

Responding to the query, the State Minister of Cooperative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection, Lasantha Alagiyawanna said that based on the pervious report, steps were taken earlier to remove the gas cylinders with changed gas composition from the market.
