Navy deploys transport ferry following Kinniya Tragedy

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Navy has deployed a ferry today (25) to carry passengers from Kinniya to Kurinyankerni and back.

Accordingly, the Navy said that a vessel with the capacity to carry about 20 people had been deployed since this morning.

Six people, including four schoolchildren, were died when a ferry capsized at the Kurinyankerni lagoon on 23rd November. 20 injured people are still receiving treatment at hospitals.

Meanwhile, Kinniya residents today raised white flags at their homes, Government, and private institutions to express their condolences over the tragedy.

Shops and schools in Kinniya were closed today (25), in solidarity with the victims of the ferry disaster.

Meanwhile, the suspects arrested in connection with the death of six persons including children were remanded till December 08, whilst the Kinniya Mayor, who was arrested today (25), has been remanded until December 09th.

The owner of the ferry and the two operators were arrested yesterday (24) morning.
