COLOMBO (News 1st); MP Diana Gamage says that the country can be free from debt by legalizing hemp cultivation and exporting it with Government assistance.
The MP said in Parliament yesterday (16) that this would create an opportunity for the country to earn a large amount of foreign exchange.
She also added that it is a great opportunity to legalize and export hemp, which is naturally provided by the environment, and against the backdrop where the previous international market for tea, rubber, and coconut has lost its marketplace.
MP Gamage enunciated on the matter taking into account other countries in the world that earn income from hemp exports, as well as the forecast data on the future benefits of hemp exports.
She said it was no longer necessary to seek financial assistance from international financial institutions if the cultivation and export of hemp was carried out as a commercial crop.
“Our country can bring in billions of dollars in foreign exchange. We do not have to beg from anyone. You don't have to bow down to anyone. We do not need to go for this IMF loan. We should use this resource given by nature, legalize it, export it with the patronage of the state and earn foreign exchange ”
The MP said that various products are being made in the world using hemp, such as beauty creams, toothpaste and toothbrushes, and added that the only obstacle to bringing in large amounts of foreign exchange from the legalization and export of hemp cultivation with state sponsorship is a British-era ordinance, which should be repealed.
