COLOMBO (News 1st); Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando says most issues faced by the people have been caused due to the pandemic, and the situation will return back to normalcy after two or three weeks. Speaking at an event, the Minister pointed out that as protests is the main embodiment of democracy, it is acceptable that people may engage in protests however this time period is not the proper time to hold such protests. He also requested the Opposition not to highlight temporary issues, stating that there will not be any sugar or cement shortage after two to three weeks, and the shortages are merely temporary issues. Commenting on the Government's decision to ban chemical fertilizer, the Minister said that the farmers are engaging in protests, over the conversion from chemical to organic fertilizer, as it is hard for anyone to lose their old ways or habits. He further stated that the farmers will show the same amount of restraint if the decision was implemented 10 years into the future as well. " We must all consider here is whether we are going to let this continue and let people die from the after-effects of these chemical fertilizers, or whether we are going to implement it (Organic Fertilizer) now, therefore I believe that this is a brilliant initiative," he stated. The Minister also requested the farmers not to panic during these times as in case if there is a drop in harvest or the incomes, the Government has promised compensation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdLOahBI4HE
