Universities to re-open in phases; priority for examinations & practical sessions

COLOMBO (News 1st); The University Grants Commission on Tuesday (26) announced that universities will re-open in phases, prioritizing examinations and practical sessions.

Chairman of the UGC Sr. Professor Sampath Amaratunge speaking to News 1st said all the Vice-Chancellors of Universities, health officials, and the UGC representatives held a special discussion on reopening universities.

“Universities will re-open in phases. VCs are responsible for deciding on which faculties will be called in for academics. However, it will not apply for Medical & Applied Health Science Faculties,” he said.

He added that only students who are fully vaccinated and have obtained the second dose two weeks prior to re-opening the university will be permitted to enter the premises.

Sr. Professor Sampath Amaratunge said 90% of the university students have been vaccinated, and the respective universities will also arrange for those who are yet to obtain the vaccine to do so at the university premises.
