COLOMBO (News 1st); Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya will extend its full support for the effort of farmers to file a Fundamental Rights petition due to the devastation caused to farmers.
Speaking during the inaugural session of the ‘Govihadagasma’ program held at Agbopura, Lunugamvehera in Hambantota, the Opposition Leader said that the farmers are lacking fertilizers, and this had become a major issue for them.
He further stated that as there are no recommended fertilizers, the prices of agrochemicals and herbicides have gone up, and the rice yield has dropped by at least 40% due to the unavailability of fertilizers on time.
Emphasizing that the Government should be responsible for this, he pointed out that the prices of goods has gone beyond the Government’s control.
Now they are asking farmers to use organic fertilizer, but they have not been given any proper instructions, he stated.
” How is this organic fertilizer made, how is it applied when it is made, what is that methodology? There is no awareness about any of that” The Opposition Leader said.
