COLOMBO (News 1st); The retail prices for rice announced by Rice Mill Owners is unreasonable, said State Minister of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection, Lasantha Alagiyawanna on Tuesday (28).
In a statement, Lasantha Alagiyawanna had noted that if any faction decides to abuse the government's decision to lift control prices and increase the prices, the government and the consumer affairs authority will responsibly intervene to protect the consumer.
He added that following cabinet approval to import 100,000 MT of rice, measures will be taken to expedite the import process and ensure that rice reaches the consumers.
On Tuesday (28) afternoon, Rice Mill owners have announced the new retail price for rice, following the government decision to lift control prices.
Businessman Dudley Sirisena addressing the media said the price revision will be as follows :
01 kg of Nadu Rice – Rs. 115/-
01 kg of Samba Rice – Rs. 140/-
01 kg of Keeri Samba – Rs. 165/-
He said the above prices are for rice that is of high quality.
