COLOMBO (News 1st); The Medical Research Institute says new sub-variants of the DELTA variant which is currently prevalent in the country, have been discovered.
Consultant Virologist at the Medical Research Institute, Dr Nadeeka Janage said the authorities are focused on the sub-variants that may be created in the future.
Speaking to News 1st, Dr. Janage said it has been observed that the DELTA variant of the COVID-19 virus is mainly dominant in the country at present, compared to three months ago when the ALPHA variant was more dominant.
He said based on tests conducted, it has been observed that the DELTA variant was also mutating, leading to the discovery of new sub-variants and mutations.
Dr. Nadeeka Janage said based on observations so far, the sub-variants and the DELTA variant act in a similar manner.
