COLOMBO (News 1st): The Former President Maithripala Sirisena says that it is important to consider the archaeological significance of any ancient creation before laying hands on it.
Speaking to the media at Battaramulla today (19), the former President emphasized on the importance of Parakrama Samudraya.
” We need to consider the historical significance of ancient constructions. Why are we not building anything on the Sigiriya rock, although it is the perfect place to build a helipad? We don’t do it because ancient constructions are sacred. Then King Mahaparakramabahu combined four tanks and made this Parakrama Samudraya. It is therefore important to understand its significance. The tank itself and the breakwater are both sacred. The tank also provides food for the animals and enhances biodiversity.” he said.
The former President emphasized that in view of the historical, archeological and technical factors, especially the environmental conditions, it is not appropriate to lay hands on a tank that was built before our time.
