COLOMBO (News 1st): The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka Hanaa Singer has issued a statement with regard to the ill treatment of prisoners in the country.
Citing the Mandela Rules, which underlines that provision of ethical health care for prisoners is a State responsibility, she states that the Unites Nations Sri Lanka is currently in works to strengthen capacities to uphold the rights of all those in custody.
Moreover, she emphasizes that the United Nations condemns any ill treatment of prisoners.
It is the duty of the State, as per the #MandelaRules, to protect the rights of prisoners. In our work on prison reform and drug rehabilitation @UNSriLanka works to strengthen capacities to uphold the rights of all those in custody & condemns any ill treatment of #prisoners.
