COLOMBO (News 1st): The United Nations Development Program will provide assistance for the rehabilitation of drug-dependent persons, the United Nations Resident Representative of Sri Lanka, Hanaa Singer has stated.

She stated this during a meeting held between the United Nations Resident Representative in Sri Lanka and Justice Minister Ali Sabry at the Ministry of Justice today.

The discussion focused on amending the constitution and measures taken to make the administration of justice more effective as well as the rehabilitation of inmates in prisons.

During her meeting, UN Resident Coordinator Hanaa Singer-Hamdy also mentioned the importance of promoting voluntary treatment and offered UN support to the Government in promoting non-custodial measures as an alternative to imprisonment. Non-custodial measures would also directly address issues of prison overcrowding.
