COLOMBO (News 1st) : The Parliamentary Select Committee on Elections Rules and Reforms convened at the Parliament today (12).
Several resolutions were brought up at the relevant meeting, including the need for a mixed electoral system, the necessity of maintaining the executive Presidency and that proper procedures should be put in place to prevent the appointment of dual citizens as the President.
The Committee also mulled the possibility of holding the Presidential and General Elections on the same day and the Provincial Council and Local Government Elections on the same day.
Moreover, several suggestions such as setting up systems to submit Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) of alliances between parties and and other documents, including those which outline election expenses was highlighted.
The meeting, which was Chaired by the Minister of External Affairs Dinesh Gunawardena, was attended by Parliamentarisns such as Duminda Dissanayake, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Ali Sabry, G.L. Peiris, Mahinda Amaraweera along with Party represantatives and other dignitaries such as Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu.
The next meeting of the Committee is scheduled for August 18.
