COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa urged the government to stop toying with the people's lives and adopt a people-centric approach by understanding the present situation in the country.

Sajith Premadasa pointed out that the government had lost its command in controlling the spread of COVID-19 and the prices of goods.

In a statement, he said the wholesale prices of Rice, Wheat Flour, Sugar, Milk Powder, Coffee, Soy Beans, and Meat had increased from 16% to 32%.

The wholesale prices of products manufactured using Milk Power, Batter, Soy, Oil and other grains and fruits have also increased.

Sajith Premadasa said a market mafia is in operation and the government is allowing it to function by doing nothing.

He said the market mafia had violated all the gazettes and circulars issued with the intention of controlling the prices of goods.

The Opposition Leader alleges the government has shown no regard to the people who cannot bear the rising cost of goods at a time those people have no means of income.

He pointed out that, rather than understanding the situation at hand, the government is more focused on unnecessary large-scale projects.

Sri Lanka is now facing a very decisive juncture and the people have now been compelled to protect themselves from the government rather than protecting themselves from the coronavirus.

He stressed that the conduct of the government is inhumane and not people-friendly.
