Myths about COVID-19 vaccines, cause for many to remain unvaccinated: SPC

COLOMBO (News 1st); Misinformation has caused almost 40,000 persons over the age of 60 in the Colombo District to remain unvaccinated, the Chairman of State Pharmaceutical Corporation, Dr. Prasanna Gunasena states. Speaking at the Government Information Department today (09), Dr. Gunasena said that many are refusing to take vaccines due to myths, such as one brand of vaccines being better than another or only a specific brand being better for persons going overseas. "Some other myths, such as warnings for persons with diseases or deformities to not to obtain the vaccine are also circulating on social media. In fact, those with other diseases should be the first ones to obtain the vaccine" he further stated. Moreover, Dr. Gunasena enunciated the importance of obtaining any brand of vaccine, as soon as possible to combat the disease and to ensure that the situation of those who are infected does not worsen. "Every single brand of vaccine is as efficient and successful as any other. But in some may have the ability to prevent phlegm and fever which comes along with COVID-19 better than others. What is important is the fact that any COVID-19 vaccine being able to drastically lower the chance of death due to COVID-19. This is why we are requesting everyone not to believe myths and to ensure that they obtain the vaccine as soon as possible" He added.
