Mother of three arrested for murdering newborn child

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police arrested a 35-year-old woman from Kanthale for murdering her newborn after delivering a baby on Monday (12) evening.

Police Spokesperson Senior DIG Ajith Rohana speaking to News 1st said the woman had murdered her newborn child and then burnt the remains, several hours after delivery.

He said the husband is currently overseas and has been employed in the Middle East for over 04 years.

'The suspect had developed a relationship with another during this period and as a result, got pregnant,' said the Police Spokesperson.

He added that the woman had delivered the baby at home and carried out the crime.

In addition, investigations revealed the woman is already a mother of three children.

The Magisterial Inquiry and the Post-mortem into the remains will be carried out on Tuesday (13).
