Sri Lanka collecting island-wide samples to determine spread of Delta variant

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan authorities will collect samples from various parts of the country to determine if any other person had contracted the Delta variant of the coronavirus.

Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena speaking to News 1st said samples were already obtained from quarantine facilities spread across the island, including those facilitating people who arrive from overseas.

These samples have already been sent to the University of Sri Jayawardenapura for tests, he said adding that contact tracing is already underway following the detection of the Delta variant in a Colombo neighbourhood.
