COLOMBO (News 1st): The distressed MV X-PRESS PEARL is likely to sink in the coming few hours, the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) said on Thursday morning (May 27). "There is a possibility of an explosion recurring on the ship, as the fire continues to spread. The necessary arrangements have been made to face any such situation, with the required manpower and equipment on standby," Dr. Turney Pradeep Kumara, the General Manager of Marine Environment Protection Authority told News 1st. When inquired on the possible fuel leakage into the Sri Lankan waters after the vessel submerges, Dr. Turney Pradeep Kumara pointed out that the emergency oil spill management plan is already in place, whilst the required equipment to control the spread of an oil spill is already positioned. According to Dr. Turney Pradeep Kumara, the residents in the coastal areas were already informed on the matter. Commenting on seeking compensation for the damages caused as a result of the X-PRESS PEARL to the Sri Lankan marine eco-system, Dr. Turney Pradeep Kumara said an initial complaint was lodged on the matter and the crew on board the vessel will be interrogated in the coming days.
