COLOMBO (News 1st): There is a risk of minor flood levels in the areas located above the Kalu river basin, the Department of Irrigation said on Tuesday morning (May 25).

“Minor floods could occur in the low-lying areas of the Kalu river basin located in the Divisional Secretariats of the Ratnapura, Nivithigala, Pelmadulla, Kahawatte, and Elapatha,” Eng. S.P.C. Sugeeshwara, the Director of Irrigation (Hydrology & Disaster Management) at the Irrigation Department told News 1st.

The highest rainfall of 175.5 mm in the 24 hours that ended on Tuesday morning (May 25) was recorded from the Elton Estate area in Nawalapitiya, the Department of Meteorology said.

According to the Met Department, the Kandal-Oya Estate area of Nawalapitiya has received 175 mm of rainfall.

Moreover, 150 mm of rainfall was recorded from Kalupahana.

Very heavy falls exceeding 150 mm could be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa province and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts, while heavy falls exceeding 100 mm could be expected in the Western, North-Western, and Southern provinces, the weather forecast for Tuesday (May 25) noted.
