(VIDEO) Drones used to monitor quarantine violators; 636 arrested on Sunday (23)

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police launched a special operation in the Colombo District to detect those who violate the quarantine rules and regulations.

"Police received information of violations from the Colombo North & Central areas, especially in flats and housing schemes," said Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana.

The special operation which involved the use of drones and the Police Special Task Force was carried out in Keselwatte, Maligawatte, and Grandpass on Sunday (23).

27 people who failed to follow the quarantine rules and regulations were admonished by Police Officers however, 04 people were arrested for seriously violating the quarantine rules and regulations.

In addition, on Sunday (23) 636 people were arrested from across the island for failing to face masks and maintain social distancing, and this is the highest number of arrests made in a single day with respect to these offenses.

206 people were arrested from Matale, said the Police Spokesperson.

Since the 30th of October 2020, a total of 12,748 people were arrested for the aforementioned offenses.

Further, at the entry and exit points of the Western Province, 3,627 people were subject to inspections and were identified as personnel involved in essential services.

However, 137 people were admonished for not following the quarantine rules and regulations.
