COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka experienced a surge in COVID-19 cases in May 2021, and at the same time, the island nation is being battered by heavy rains and thunderstorms.

Torrential rainfall in North West Sri Lanka forced many waterways to overflow and floods destroyed around 30 acres of paddy lands.

Farmers say the flood rendered them helpless as the harvest was to be reaped in a few weeks.

Wariyapola, another locality in North West Sri Lanka was inundated by floodwaters following a torrential downpour.

People were left stranded as floodwaters did not recede for several hours.

A massive boulder fell onto a road in Hanguranketha in Central Sri Lanka following a heavy downpour.

Sri Lanka's Met Department said heavy rainfall of over 100 mm can be expected in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Western, Uva, and Eastern provinces and in Galle, Matara, Polonnaruwa, and Mullaitivu districts during the evening or night.

Showers or thundershowers may occur in the coastal areas of the Western and Southern provinces.
