905 arrested for drunk driving during the weekend: Police

COLOMBO (News 1st): Within a period of 18-hours since a special traffic operation was launched on Saturday (Apr. 18), 905 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence, Sri Lanka Police said. The special traffic operation initiated on Saturday (Apr. 18) is still ongoing and will continue until further notice, Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana told News 1st on Tuesday (Apr. 20). According to the Deputy Police Chief, 6,898 cases of traffic law violations were also detected during the said time frame. Upon analysing the accident statistics during the festive season, DIG Ajith Rohana observed that 75% of the road accidents involved either three-wheelers or motorcycles. Special Police teams have been deployed at the entry points of expressways equipped with Breathalyzer devices to conduct inspections at random with regard to motorists who enter the expressways, the Police Spokesperson emphasized.
