Colombo (News 1st); The people never gave a mandate to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa or his government to build a Chinese territory that will have long-term negative impacts on the country, said JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Friday (06).
The Colombo Port City Economic Commission is to be established on the need of the China Harbour Engineering Company to fall in line with the Chinese geopolitical economic vision, alleged Anura Kumara Dissanayake. "At present, there are issues between India and China. If Sri Lanka allies itself with one country and falls victim to its geopolitical program, Sri Lanka will have to brace itself for the threats from the other country," warned Dissanayake. Only the people have the right to make key decisions for the country and that is why the JVP filed an application with the Supreme Court seeking an order for a referendum for the passage of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill, he said adding President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his government is not given the right to slice-off parts of Sri Lanka as they fancy. Anura Kumara Dissanayake went on to note if the President has undertaken the path of threatening MPs, the fate of the people is cause for concern. He was commenting on the statement made by MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe who claimed the President phoned him and threatened him on Friday (16) morning. ADK said the President could have responded to Wijeyadasa's claims either at the Discussion with the Village program or via the President's Media Unit or the Government Information Department.
