Penal Code to be amended to combat online fake news - Minister

Colombo (News 1st); The Penal Code is to be amended to combat the spread of fake news spread online, said Public Security Minister Rear Admiral (Retd) Dr. Sarath Weerasekara.

"These amendments will not be an obstruction for Freedom of Speech," said the Minister adding fake news directly affects coexistence between communities, and thus, it needs to counters. The Minister went on to note the proposals to amend the Penal Code will also impose punishments on those who spread comments on terrorism and extremism.
