Protesting farmers spend New Year at Satyagraha sites

COLOMBO (News1st): Farmers engaged in Satyagraha campaigns across the country spent their New Year at their protest sites today. According to these farmers, the maintenance of a managed wild elephant reserve under proper regulations will reduce loss of life and damage incurred to properties. Saman Sudarshana, the Secretary of the Walawe Left Bank United Farmers' Organization, said his group cannot accept the gazette on the managed wild elephant reserve. "We are not ready to accept this gazette because they have not informed us as to how regulations will be formed and how this will solve the elephant habitat problem," he said. The children of the farmers came to visit them to their temporarily set up huts to obtain their blessings in the New Year. The Satyagraha campaign carried out by farmers in Mahiyanganaya extending their support towards the farmers of Walsapugala and demanding solutions for the Human-Elephant Conflict entered its 29th day today. On the other hand, the Sathyagraha launched by the people of Galgamuwa demanding a permanent solution for the Human-Elephant Conflict entered its 30th day today.
