COLOMBO (News 1st): During the course of this year, 564 people have died due to fatal road accidents, Sri Lanka Police said. "During the past week from 27th March to 02nd April, 52 people died as a result of fatal road accidents," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Indika Hapugoda, the Director of Traffic Control and Road Safety told News 1st on Monday (Apr. 05). According to SSP Indika Hapugoda, during the course of this year, 1270 people who sustained critical injuries in road accidents were admitted to hospitals. The sharp rise in accident fatalities is due to the failure of motorists, pedestrians, and passengers to obey road rules, traffic signs and due to motorists driving at excessive speeds, driving under the influence, and neglectful driving, SSP Hapugoda elaborated.
