Colombo (News 1st); The Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) ordered the Ministry of Education to submit a report on the new National Education Policy, which is currently being drafted.
The Committee recommended that the National Policy on School Education should be revised expeditiously as the education system is an integral part of the national development process. Accordingly, the Education Minister was directed to submit a report by May. In addition, the Vice-Chancellors of Sri Lankan Universities requested that special attention be paid to the elimination of ragging in the university system when formulating the new national education policy. The Committee on Public Accounts paid special attention to the fact that the unemployment rate of art graduates is over fifty percent. COPA pointed out that steps should be taken to further strengthen the teaching of English in schools and universities to enhance communication skills.
