COLOMBO (News 1st): Dahaiyagala is home to a unique ecosystem. The wild elephants use this area as a corridor to travel between Bogahapitiya and Udawalawa to source their food. The Dahaiyagala area, which spans across 26.8 square kilometres, was declared a sanctuary on the 7th of July of 2002. The Youth Front of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna visited the site and witnessed how the area was being prepared for a new project on Thursday (25 March) In line with the plan, sand is being excavated for the construction of a wall surrounding the Uma Oya reserve. When the group contacted the Engineer In Charge of the project about the impact this will have on the Dahaiyagala Reserve, the activities that are being carried out is to ensure the surrounding area is restored to its previous condition. The Engineer admitted that special approval had not been obtained to carry out these activities.
