Operations at Sapugaskanda Refinery to continue despite COVID-19 cases

COLOMBO (News 1st): The operations at the Sapugaskanda Refinery will not be hampered despite COVID-19 positive cases reported at the location, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) said. The Sapugaskanda refinery produces only 20 percent of the country's fuel requirement; whereas the remainder is imported as already refined fuel to meet the country's demand, Sumith Wijesinghe, the Chairman of the CPC told News 1st on Monday (Mar. 22). According to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, the maintenance activities carried out at the oil refinery every three years, was also conducted from 15th February 2021. As of Monday (Mar. 22), 372 employees at the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery have so far been confirmed positive for COVID-19.
