COLOMBO (News 1st): A tense situation arose in Walsapugala due to the installation of an electric fence preventing elephants from entering the Southern Expressway by the Road Development Authority. The farmers expressed concerns over the consequences of setting up the fence, citing that it would trap elephants in the village despite not entering the expressway. "Install the fence after providing us with a solution to this. We will not object to this if the elephants on this side are sent away to the other side of the village," one farmer said. Another farmer pointed out that wild elephants have attacked cultivations and also posed a threat to the lives of villagers. According to farmers, the Road Development Authority has taken steps to construct a two-kilometre long electric fence bordering the expressway. The installation of the electric fence was halted after it was met with an outcry from villagers, our correspondent reported.
