COLOMBO (News 1st): Special teams consisting of inmates will be deployed to prevent drug smuggling inside prisons, the Department of Prisons said.
“Selected inmates who can lead other inmates, will be provided a special training where they could create awareness among other prisoners and act against the smuggling of narcotic substances inside prison premises,” Thushara Upuldeniya, the Prisons Commissioner-General told News 1st on Thursday (Mar. 04).
According to Thushara Upuldeniya, the programme will be initiated jointly by the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board and Rehabilitation Unit of the Prisons Department.
The Prisons Commissioner-General was hopeful the initiative could help save inmates who are imprisoned from addiction to narcotics.
