Arrest police officers who assaulted law student; AG tells IGP

Colombo (News 1st); Attorney General Dappula De Livera has directed the Inspector General of Police to arrest all Suspect Police Officers of the Peliyagoda Police involved in the assault of law student Migara Gunaratne.

State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne, the Coordinating Officer to the Attorney General told News 1st that the IGP was also directed to produce the suspects before a court on charges under the Penal Code & Torture Act. 04 police officers attached to the Peliyagoda Police station were interdicted following an incident of an assault on a law student inside the police station on the 25th of February 2021. Sri Lanka Police said Senior DIG In-charge of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon on that day had given the necessary instructions to interdict the police officers in question and launch an inquiry. Accordingly, 01 Chief Inspector and 03 Police Constables were interdicted.
