Wages Board approves Rs. 1000 daily wage of Estate Workers

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Wages Board has approved the proposal to increase the daily wage of estate workers to Rs. 1,000, during a discussion held on Monday (Mar. 01), the Commissioner General of Labour confirmed. Accordingly, the gazette notification in this regard will be issued within a week, Prabhath Chandrakeerthi, the Commissioner General of Labor said on Tuesday (Mar. 02). "On 8th February 2021, the Wages Board decided to increase the daily wage of estate workers to Rs. 1000 and the government gazette calling for objections in this regard was published. Thereafter, on the 19th of February a meeting was called to take into consideration the objections received in this regard; however, it was postponed till yesterday (01)," Chandrakeerthi told News 1st. According to the Commissioner General of Labor, once the Minister of Labour is informed of the decision and with his approval, the gazette will be issued. "Thereby, the daily wage of estate workers will be increased to Rs. 1000 with effect from the date of publication of the said gazette," Prabhath Chandrakeerthi, the Commissioner General of Labor told News 1st.
