COLOMBO (News 1st): The Maharagama Police arrested a 44-year-old suspect from Pannipitiya, who has confessed to 10 chain snatching incidents, Sri Lanka Police said on Thursday (Feb. 25). A motorcycle was also seized during the arrest and according to Police, the suspect had stolen the motorcycle in the Meegoda police jurisdiction area few days ago. "Upon being interrogated by Police, the 44-year-old suspect confessed to 10 chain snatching cases committed in Boralesgamuwa, Piliyandala, Pamunugama, Athurugiriya and Maharagama Police areas," Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana told News 1st. According to DIG Ajith Rohana, upon recording a statement from the suspect, Police had recovered the stolen golden chains. Maharagama Police are conducting further investigations and the suspect would be produced at the Magistrate's court on Thursday (Feb. 25). Whilst emphasizing that there is an increasing trend with regard to the rate of motorcycle theft and chain snatching cases, the Deputy Police Chief urged the public to take precautions. "You should take all the precautionary actions in order to prevent the crimes in respect of this nature. Especially, those dependent on drugs are involved in these types of crimes. Therefore, kindly take precautionary actions in order to prevent such crimes," DIG Ajith Rohana stressed.
