Colombo (News 1st); Locomotive Engine Operators will stage a strike action with effect from midnight on Monday (22).
The Locomotive Engine Operators’ Union (LEOU) Secretary Indika Dodangoda said the strike is in protest to the proposed railway project between Mahawa and Omanthai which will be funded by an Indian Line of Credit.
He said in addition to locomotive drivers, the railway guards, technicians, and affiliated trade unions will go on strike against the decision taken to completely remove the Mahawa – Omanthai line and add a new line using 100 Million US Dollars without even repairing a single bridge along that railway line.
He said the demand is for the immediate development of the dual-track system from Mahawa to Polgahawela and to thereafter do the same for the Mahawa – Omanthai railway line.
