Army, Navy, Air Force & Police add color to 73rd Independence Day

Colombo (News 1st); Sri Lanka celebrated her 73rd National Independence Day under the theme, ‘Isurumath Heta Dinak-Saubhagyawath Mawubimak’ (Glorious Tomorrow & A Prosperous Motherland) in a simple, yet colour-rich ceremony at the Independence Square at Colombo.

The elegant national spectacle of the year was dignified by the presence of religious leaders of all major denominations and other guests.

An eye-catching tri-service Guard of Honour, was accorded to the President, followed by the customary 21-Gun Salute, presented by Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment.

The President called upon all Sri Lankans, irrespective of petty differences, to rise to the occasion and jointly help overcome all the challenges on our road to recovery.

“I am the leader that you searched for. I will discharge the responsibility you have entrusted to me, with commitment and dedication,” said the President.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has advised the Attorney General’s Department to swiftly act upon matters that have caused great concern to the public, such as the 2019 April 21st Attacks and the Central Bank scam.

The President said taking into account the recommendations of the previous Parliament’s Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security, action will be taken against all parties involved in the 2019 April 21st Attacks.

“We will not allow those responsible for designing and enabling this tragedy to escape justice,” stressed the President adding “We will never allow extremism to raise its head again, in this country”

Soon after the Presidential address, the smart parade comprised of tri-service Officers and Other ranks, Police and the Civil Defence Service personnel in their respective ceremonials was reported by the Parade Commander, Major General Priyankara Fernando.

A total of 5922 troops, Police, Civil Security Department, Special Task Force and, attired in their ceremonial dresses afterwards began their march-past, according to their salute to the President.

A display of airpower with Mig jets and light aircraft also symbolized the significance of the day towards the end of the day’s proceedings.
