16-year-old drowns in Walawe River; Teacher arrested for negligence

Colombo (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police arrested a school teacher over the death of a 16-year-old female student who drowned in the Walawe River in Kaltota, Balangoda. 

The teacher was identified as in-charge of extracurricular activities of a school in the Kaltota Police area and she had taken 15 students for a river bath in the Walawe River, and thereafter one student was reported missing. 

The body was recovered by Sri Lanka Police 02 hours after the student was reported missing and the cause of death was ruled as drowning, said Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana. 

A police investigation revealed the teacher had taken the students for a swim without the permission of the principal of the school as well as from the Zonal Education Director of the area. 

The school teacher was arrested for reckless and neglectful acts and she will be produced at the Balangoda Magistrate’s Court on Monday (01).
