COLOMBO (News1st): Former prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that his government’s plan to develop the Colombo Port’s East Container Terminal did not involve India’s Adani Group.
“We carried out a program to develop the port, in line with a memorandum of a corporation that we signed with Japan and India,” Wickremesinghe recalled during an event in Nugegoda on Sunday.
He added that the former government had requested that if a Japanese company or Indian Company is operating an Indian Port, the Colombo port should also be treated similarly.
“We told them that if required, they can discuss the matter with the new government and amend the conditions accordingly,” the former prime minister noted.
He insisted that his government is not to be blamed for the current turn of events surrounding the terminal that has stirred controversy.
