Colombo (News 1st); Defence Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne (Retd) said a new program will be introduced to prevent seized drugs from being re-entering the drug trade.

When Sri Lanka Navy and Police venture into deep seas and return with more than 1400 kilograms of seized drugs and hand it over to the authorities, one portion goes to court, and the other returns to the drug trade, he claimed. He said the tainted personnel within the system were identified and prosecuted, adding such incidents take place where large amounts of drugs are placed in one location. He said a program will be made in consultation with the Justice Minister to produce a sample to the judge when drugs are seized and to immediately destroy the rest of the drugs.
