COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka Police arrested eight suspects in connection with the road accident that claimed the life of a 32-year-old mother and her three and a half-year-old son after they were run over by an SUV in the Pahala-Balalla area of the Mahawa Police jurisdiction, along the Anuradhapura - Padeniya Road on Tuesday (15), Police said on Wednesday (Dec. 16).
According to Police Spokesperson - DIG Ajith Rohana, Mahawa Police are conducting further investigations into the accident that occurred around 6:30 pm on Tuesday.
Based on Police investigations, 11 people were travelling in the SUV at the time of the accident, the Deputy Police Chief said, adding "...three people including the driver have been absconding court, while the remaining eight were taken into police custody."
According to DIG Ajith Rohana, empty beer cans were recovered from the SUV.
While referring to the recent tragic accident in Moratuwa on 4th December that claimed the lives of two children and left a mother critically injured, the Police Spokesperson said there seems to an increasing trend of road accidents.
"Take all necessary precautions to prevent road accidents at all times. When you are crossing the road along with children, be careful," DIG Ajith Rohana requested the people.
The Traffic Police are conducting an operation throughout the country to apprehend indisciplined drivers and those who drive under the influence, the Deputy Police Chief noted.
