Colombo (News 1st); Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday (11) instructed the members of the Elections Commission to explore the possibility of conducting the Provincial Council Elections as soon as possible and to look into the necessary legal provisions for this purpose.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Prime Minister met with the members of the Elections Commission at his Vijerama residence.
The Elections Commission members were told to explore the possibility of conducting the election according to the old or present electoral system.
The Elections Commission informed the Prime Minister of the fact the necessary legal provisions in order to change the electoral system need to be made at the ministerial level.
They had pointed out, to conduct the Provincial Council Elections according to the old system and thereafter draft the necessary legislation and conduct the future election according to the new electoral system.
The Prime Minister had noted a request on the matter was forwarded to the Speaker of Parliament as well.
