Colombo (News 1st); Samagi Jana Balavegaya Parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne speaking in Parliament alleged the government is taking measures to abolish key institutions in order to provide benefits to companies owned by their associates.
Wickramaratne said Mahinda Rajapaksa was defeated because the economic team surrounding him misled him.
He warned the President needs to have a team change and not a system change.
Opposition lawmaker Anura Kumara Dissanayake slammed the President's Secretary for instructing the Treasury Secretary to do away with the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka.
The leader of the Jathika Jana Balavegaya stressed the PUCSL is a body established by the Parliament and it operates on behalf of the people of the country.
'What power does the Treasury Secretary possess to abolish a body established by Parliament and urged the PUCSL members to resign," questioned Dissanayake.
SJB Parliamentarian Patali Chamika Ranawaka alleged the Ceylon Electricity Board reached an Rs. 40 Billion loss, despite electricity consumption in the country dropping by 33% and hydro-power generation being at a reasonable capacity.
He said under the 2015 government, the CEB made a profit of Rs. 20 Billion and questioned if the government is attempting to sell public property in order to cover the losses.
The Former Minister warned the country would not benefit if bodies such as the Public Utilities Commission are abolished.
