COLOMBO (News 1st): The identity of all 11 inmates who were killed in the Mahara Prison Riot that broke out on 29th November 2020, has been identified, Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana confirmed on Thursday (Dec. 10). The bodies were placed at the Ragama hospital mortuary; initially, three bodies were identified by the relatives and later another four. The court has ordered to conduct the autopsies of the deceased by a five-member panel of experts consisting of four Consultant Judicial Medical Officers and one Ballistic Expert from the Government Analyst's Department," the Deputy Police Chief said. According to DIG Ajith Rohana, further investigations conducted regarding the imprisonment of the deceased revealed that all the inmates were arrested for drug-related offences. "The Criminal Investigations Department is conducting further investigations. The 25-member team is in the process of recording statements from inmates, prison officers, doctors, and health workers at the prison," the Police Spokesperson further noted.
