No political prisoners in Sri Lanka; says Udaya Gammanpila

Colombo (News 1st); There are no political prisoners in Sri Lanka said Joint Cabinet Spokesperson (Minister) Udaya Gammanpila on Tuesday (08) at the weekly cabinet media briefing.

He said the Government of Sri Lanka does not have any issue with respect to Political Prisoners, as there are none.

Speaking further, he said the suspended process of reviewing prison sentences every four years will be reintroduced, where death sentences will be commuted to life in prison, while life in prison will be commuted to 20 years.

He said this applies to all prisoners irrespective of their race and community adding, those arrested for drug possession would be considered for rehabilitation while drug traffickers will be subject to such clemency.
