Colombo (News 1st); The cyclonic storm BUREVI is expected to cause widespread rainfall across Sri Lanka over the next two days, with a likelohood of isolated extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday.

The cyclonic storm ‘ BUREVI’ over the south-west Bay of Bengal, lay centered near latitude 8.1°N and longitude 84.2°E, about 330 km east-southeast of Trincomalee at 2330 hrs of 01st December, said the Department of Meteorology

The system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Batticaloa and Point-Pedro, close to Trincomalee around today (02nd December) evening/night.

This Cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 75-85 kmph gusting up to 95 kmph and it is very likely to move nearly westwards thereafter, emerge into Gulf of Mannar.

Chief Secretary of the Eastern Province Thusitha Wanigasinghe speaking to News 1st said a special relief program is being coordinated among the District Secretaries to prepare for the cyclone which will make landfall on Wednesday (02) in Sri Lanka.

Plans are in motion to evacuate people living in vulnerable coastal areas to safe location, and all schools in the Eastern Province are closed until Friday (04).

Thusitha Wanigasinghe said relief camps will be set-up in schools and a Disaster Management Program will be coordinated with the Sri Lanka Police and three Armed Forces.
